  • 1.  UI/UX as a differentiator

I'm in the process of validating my idea, and considering there's competition in the same space with similar software solutions, I'm contemplating what could set my offering apart. In your view, do you think having a superior user experience, mobile responsiveness, and other related features would be sufficient to distinguish my product from the competition?

If there is competition in your same space then I recommend becoming an expert in your competition. It is very important to understand how your competition fills the customers needs. What is your competition doing that is right for the customer? What is your competition missing?

You asked "In your view, do you think having a superior user experience, mobile responsiveness, and other related features would be sufficient to distinguish my product from the competition?"  It depends. Most customers are approached by new businesses promising they can do things faster, better, cheaper . But this is rarely true.  If you can actually provide a superior user experience, better mobile responsiveness, and better features at a lower cost then yes you can be distinguished from your competition. However, you will have to have clear examples of what you promise for any customer to take you seriously.  The best advertisement are customers using your service / product and recommending it to other customers.

Anyone can say they can create a better, faster, cheaper  product  or service. Executing this is where it becomes difficult and selling it at a profit is where most businesses fail. (20.4% businesses fail in 1 year, 50.4% in 5 years, 66.4% in 10 years, 86.3% in 29 years source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)

Appreciate the advice around really getting to know my competition. I've got a pretty good understanding of the space, but can always do more there. Also "cheaper" is a key in all of this to ensure its longevity. Thanks, @Paul Bodnar!

Hey @Rose Jian! For me, time is one of the most valuable things there is - I can always go out and work more and make more, but I can't buy more time. Because of this, I will often pay a higher price for a better user experience - one that makes sense, is easy to learn and understand, is quicker, and saves me time (or even feel like it saves me time). Now if you can do all of that AND make it less expensive, that seems to be the ultimate win-win for you and your customers.

Speaking of saving me time, if I can do something on my phone and it's the same of a better UX than on my laptop, I prioritize that because I always have my phone with me.
