Hey @Lorraine Cereno, nice to meet you!

As someone with extensive experience as a paralegal and who now focuses on training, what knowledge areas are most important for a paralegal starting in the industry?

Hello, @Ingrid Magalhaes!  Nice to meet you as well, albeit virtually!

A paralegal starting in the field needs to be willing to learn and be diligent.  They should not be afraid to ask questions; they should understand the reason for the task, rather than just knowing the process for doing it.

Attention to detail is very important, as is being thorough.  Since a big part of paralegal work involves communicating with internal and external clients, a beginning paralegal should learn to communicate their ideas clearly and succinctly, both in writing and verbally.

Above all, a beginning paralegal should have a real interest in their job, because there is more to it than meets the eye.

@Lorraine Cereno I love the part about having "a real interest in their job." That is so evident in so many of the paralegals that we work with and makes the work so much more interesting.
