We are managing an unforeseen death of a staffer. We would like to provide some resources to the next of kin regarding securities held in Carta. Can you please let us know how to proceed?

I'm sorry to hear that. Regarding your inquiry, before granting the beneficiary access to the deceased portfolio, please ensure that this conversation has been discussed with your legal team as they will need to best instruct the company on how to reflect this change.

If the deceased has shares, our Support team will guide you so you can perform the transfer to the beneficiary. While performing the transfer, you will need to attach the death certificate on the transfer agreement field.

If the deceased has option grants, the company must cancel the option grant of the deceased and reissue it under the beneficiary's name. Typically, the cancellation date of the deceased stakeholder's grant matches the issue date of the new option grant in order to ensure accurate historical quantities and ownership in the cap table.
