  • 1.  Transferring Shares from Deceased to Family Member

    Unfortunately, one of our clients had a contractor pass away, and per the terms of the option plan for the Company, his family (wife) has 18 months to exercise the vested shares. How does Carta process something like this? Can we update the email address for his account to be his wife's so she can log in/manage exercising the option? Do you recommend transferring the option into her name/a new Carta account for her?

    We're so sorry to hear that. Transferring everything to their beneficiary can be achieved by attaching a copy of the death certificate as an additional document on the grant(s). You can then process a transfer to the beneficiary. Please note: the beneficiary must be added to the company ledger to process the transfer.
